Storm over Baden-Württemberg: Weather service urges caution

Anyone going out into the fresh air in Baden-Württemberg on Sunday should be prepared for a storm. The German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting wind speeds of at least 80 kilometers per hour in the lowlands throughout the state. In the mountains of the Swabian Alb or the Black Forest, heavy squalls or even hurricane-force gusts of up to 110 km/h could develop from an altitude of 1000 meters.

On the highest German mountain outside the Alps, the Feldberg in the Black Forest, meteorologists are expecting gale-force winds of around 120 kilometers per hour - even extreme gale-force winds of up to 150 km/h are possible. The peak of the low is expected around midday.

Wherever there are many trees - for example in parks, forests or cemeteries - beware of falling branches or falling trees, according to a DWD spokesperson. Many trees still have a lot of foliage and therefore offer the wind a surface to attack. People outside should also beware of falling roof tiles.

The strong winds will be accompanied by repeated showers, with the possibility of thunderstorms in the evening and afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be between 7 and 11 degrees on the Danube and up to 15 degrees in the north of the country.

In the night to Monday, the storm is expected to weaken but persist. There may still be heavy squalls, especially on the Feldberg. The new week will then get off to a changeable start: according to the DWD, sunshine is expected on Monday morning, but there could be thunderstorms and renewed squalls in the Black Forest in the afternoon. It is expected to be 7 degrees on the Alb and up to 15 degrees on the Rhine.

Despite the storm warnings, some individuals might still choose to go out for a walk. They should be aware that the wind speeds in the mountains could reach hurricane-force levels, potentially leading to fallen branches or trees.

Thunderstorms are also expected in the evening and afternoon, making it essential for everyone to remain vigilant and seek shelter if necessary.
