Storm alert issues: Multitudes evacuate Bangladesh's coastal areas
Cyclone Remal is predicted to strike Bangladesh's coast and some regions of India on Sunday evening (local time). As a precaution, the three seaports and Chittagong's international airport in Bangladesh's second largest city have been shut down.
Muhammed Abul Kalam Mallik, from the Meteorological Department, emphasized the potential for a storm surge reaching up to four meters above normal high tide. This could pose a significant risk, causing the storms to potentially reach speeds of 130 kilometers per hour.
Almost 78,000 aid workers are currently in Bangladesh, informing the public about the evacuation process. Approximately 4,000 shelters have been established along the coast for the affected individuals and their livestock. Additionally, shelter centers have been set up on the island of Bhashan Char, home to many refugees from Myanmar. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea.
Over the past few decades, hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost in Bangladesh due to storms. These catastrophes have occurred more frequently due to the effects of global warming.
