- Stettner: Federal government must re-regulate asylum policy
CDU faction leader Dirk Stettner has called on the federal government to provide more support to the federal states in accepting asylum seekers. Otherwise, it should take care of it itself. "It is absolutely unacceptable that the states and municipalities have been left to deal with the billions in costs and the organization of the reception and accommodation of asylum seekers for years," he said to the German Press Agency. "Either the traffic light coalition at the federal level changes course quickly or it should also take on this task itself."
"If the traffic light continues to refuse to recognize the realities and act, we should move to a consistent change in responsibilities," said Stettner. "The federal government has large areas and the tax billions. Then the federal traffic light should build and operate the initial reception centers and emergency reception centers on its own properties."
Stettner demands accelerated asylum procedures
At the same time, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) should accelerate the asylum procedures with more staff and immediately deport rejected applicants. "Only asylum seekers with a prospect of staying should then be placed in the regular accommodations operated by the state and municipality."
The federal government is causing the problem, then it should also solve it, argued Stettner. "Of course, this has high legal hurdles," admitted the CDU faction leader. "We will measure the SPD, Greens, and FDP by whether they either change the asylum policy quickly at the federal level or take on the responsibility for their own actions and give their approval for the necessary legal adjustments."
Stettner criticized the federal government for continuing to take in refugees without restraint, not implementing agreements of the Minister Presidents' Conference, for example, to strengthen the BAMF staff, and not taking border controls seriously enough.
The CDU faction leader Dirk Stettner criticizes the federal government for not providing adequate support to the states in handling asylum seekers, stating that it should take on this responsibility itself if it continues to refuse change. The CDU also calls for the acceleration of asylum procedures by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
