In Hamburg, - Stern Prize: "SZ" report on the flyer incident linked to Aiwanger
In recognition of their work on the leaflet scandal surrounding Hubert Aiwanger, journalists from the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" have been honored with the Stern Prize. Katja Auer, Andreas Glas, and Klaus Ott received the award in the "History of the Year" category during a ceremony in Hamburg. Funded by the "Stern" magazine, judges made the decision. "Süddeutsche Zeitung" used to be part of the Gruner + Jahr publishing group but now belongs to RTL Deutschland.
The newspaper unearthed the leaflet affair in August 2023, prior to Bavarian elections. It involves an antisemitic and derogatory leaflet discovered on Hubert Aiwanger, leader of the Free Voters. He faced intense scrutiny in the scandal, claiming it was a planned attack against him. Markus Söder, Minister President (CSU), opted not to fire Aiwanger from his cabinet position. "Süddeutsche Zeitung" repeatedly rebuffed Aiwanger's criticisms of their coverage.
The Stern Prize, formerly known as the Nannen Prize, is one of Germany's most prestigious journalism awards. However, ongoing investigations into Henri Nannen's involvement in the Nazi era prompted a change to the prize's name. The ultimate findings from the research project are not yet clear.
