At the transboundary outing in Sopron on August 19, 1989, countless East German residents wandered over to Austria. This occurrence is often regarded as a major trigger for the substantial exodus of East German people, ultimately resulting in the dismantling of the Berlin Wall approximately two and a half months afterward.

The Sopron outing in August 1989 marked a significant shift, as it directly contributed to the mass exodus of East Germans. This mass exodus culminated in the historic event known as the Fall of the Wall in November 1989.
