He's been advocating for European sovereignty long before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "A Europe that defends its interests confidently and autonomously - politically, technically, and militarily", Steinmeier says.
According to Steinmeier, there are frequently misunderstandings when Europeans are criticised for failing to reach an agreement. It's the European Union's civilizational advancement that provides us with a framework in which we can peacefully strike a balance, even when we have diverse pasts and interests. Regardless, we always manage to find a solution.
