President Steinmeier expressed gratitude toward President Macron for his role in driving European growth and fostering the German-French relationship. Steinmeier remarked that Macron is not only a creator but also an inspirer, whereas others focus on limitations, Macron emphasizes possibilities.

In Munster on Tuesday, Macron was honored with the International Peace Prize of the Westphalian Peace. Steinmeier noted how much France and Germany's strong bond today can be attributed to individuals like Macron. Steinmeier noted that Macron is always ready to engage with Germany, initiate conversations, and even prompt us to step out of our comfort zones occasionally. Through their discussions, Steinmeier has gained significant knowledge about France, but also about his own country. Thanks to Macron, our relationship has developed to the point that we can advance together. Some of the major achievements in Europe wouldn't have been reachable without him.

Steinmeier regards Macron as an ardent European. Macron's goal has always been to strengthen and create a more sovereign and competitive Europe. Macron pushes boundaries and questions the status quo, so taboos aren't an issue for him.

Steinmeier highlighted Macron's pleas for a shared European security policy, a common European defense, and collaborative action in internal security. He's been advocating for European sovereignty long before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "A Europe that defends its interests confidently and autonomously - politically, technically, and militarily", Steinmeier says.

According to Steinmeier, there are frequently misunderstandings when Europeans are criticised for failing to reach an agreement. It's the European Union's civilizational advancement that provides us with a framework in which we can peacefully strike a balance, even when we have diverse pasts and interests. Regardless, we always manage to find a solution.
