Later, Steinmeier, Kretschmer, cops, and locals remained still on the town square for several minutes. Exactly at 11:34 am, the hour of the blade assault a week ago, a church bell rang. After the minute of quiet, many folks clapped to indicate their admiration for the felled police officer.

Nation Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) came to the remembrance event as well. Steinmeier, Kretschmann, and Strobl planned to consult with the police force at the Mannheim police station thereafter.

The prior Friday, a 25-year-old man from Afghanistan knifed associates of the anti-Islam citizens' organization Pax Europa on the Mannheim town square and badly wounded them. The 29-year-old police officer underwent treatment after the onslaught and was placed into a synthetic coma. He expired late on Sunday afternoon. His demise induced countrywide shock.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office is examining the presumed culprit. They believe this attack targeted freedom of expression. The supposed perp relocated to Germany in 2014. According to media reports, his asylum application was dismissed when he arrived. However, he later got a short-term residence permit.

The Baden-Württemberg police asked citizens to observe a statewide moment of silence for the fallen officer on Friday. Police offices in various states also supported the notion. Officers amassed outside their workplaces to show their camaraderie. The Baden-Württemberg state administration also implored employees of ministries and the legislature to take part in the moment of silence.
