Steinbach for the preservation of the tire plant

Brandenburg's Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach wants to avert the planned closure of the Goodyear tire plant in Fürstenwalde. "I will go to the works meeting tomorrow and address the management directly," announced the SPD politician on Wednesday during question time in the state parliament. His aim is to prevent damage to the affected employees and their families. Goodyear plans to cease tire production in Fürstenwalde in four years and cut 750 jobs.

"The closure is scheduled for the end of 2027 - time to convince the management to take a different path," said Steinbach. To this end, he had sent a list of questions on the economic situation to the management. "I can only take action once the information is on the table."

A small part of the site in Fürstenwalde is to be retained: Rubber compounds are produced there and supplied to the other Goodyear plants in Europe. In addition, tire production in Fulda is to be closed. Cheap imports from Asia and inflationary pressure were cited as reasons for the difficult situation.

Steinbach is advocating for an economic policy to persuade Goodyear's management to reconsider their decision to close the tire plant, which could impact 750 employees. To achieve this, he's seeking information from the management about the plant's economic situation.

In an effort to mitigate the planned closure's impact, Steinbach is also focusing on maintaining the car rubber compound production at the Fürstenwalde site, as it serves as a supplier for other European Goodyear plants.
