Tariff dispute - Steel wage dispute: warning strikes to increase pressure
According to IG Metall, a total of around 12,000 employees have taken part in 24-hour warning strikes since Tuesday morning in the wage dispute in the north-west German steel industry. According to the union, a further 17,000 employees in Duisburg were called to take part in all-day work stoppages from Thursday evening. IG Metall wants to increase the pressure on the employers with the warning strikes before and during the 5th round of negotiations this Friday.
On Thursday, the 24-hour work stoppages began at 06.00 a.m. in Bochum, Bremen and Mülheim, among other places. "Everything is at a standstill here," said an IG Metall spokesperson at a Thyssenkrupp site in Bochum in the morning. According to a spokesperson, around 300 employees gathered at another of the company's sites in Bochum. "The colleagues are pissed off," she said.
Among other things, the union is demanding a wage increase of 8.5 percent over a twelve-month period and a 32-hour week with full pay compensation. The employers have offered a one-off payment of 1,000 euros for January 2024 and a pay rise of 3.5 percent from July 2024 for a total term of 19 months.
Negotiations are set to continue on Friday afternoon in Düsseldorf. The peace period ended at the end of November. Since then, there have been numerous three- to four-hour warning strikes. According to IG Metall, more than 9600 employees have taken part in these strikes this week alone. According to the union, 2,800 employees took part in the largest action in Salzgitter alone on Thursday.
Around 68,000 people are employed in the steel and iron industry in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Lower Saxony.
