Statistics: slight increase in mortality in NRW in 2022

According to the state statistics office, 234,176 people died in North Rhine-Westphalia last year. Converted to the entire NRW population, this equates to 13 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, IT.NRW announced on Tuesday. This means around one more death per 1,000 inhabitants than in 2021 - when the figure was 12.3. In the three years before the pandemic - i.e. 2017 to 2019 - the average death rate was lower at 11.6.

With regard to age, it was stated that mortality had increased in the older age groups in 2022: For people aged over 60, the mortality rate in the age group rose to 41.3 deaths per 1,000 people of the same age (2021: 39.1). In contrast, the mortality rate for those under 60 fell slightly (1.5) and was therefore roughly at the level of the pre-pandemic years 2017 to 2019.
