Residents of Hamburg earned and took home more in 2020 than the previous year, but it was only a slight increase. According to data from the North Statistics Office, the 1.01 million wage and income tax payers in the city earned an average of 48,000 euros per year, a 0.4% increase from the previous year. The Altona district had the highest average income at 61,300 euros, while Hamburg-Mitte had the lowest at 33,800 euros. Rental income was also included in the calculations.

Significant income disparities between neighborhoods

The average values varied greatly among the neighborhoods. They ranged from 17,100 euros (Kleiner Grasbrook/Steinwerder) to 167,700 euros (Elbvorort Nienstedten) per tax payer.

The data also showed that the average income was largely driven by very high incomes. This means that more than two-thirds of tax payers earned less than the average income of 48,000 euros. According to the statistics office, half of all tax payers in Hamburg had an income of 30,700 euros or less.

Despite the small increase in overall income, many Hamburg residents still fall below the average income of 48,000 euros. Over half of all tax payers in the city earn 30,700 euros or less.

The significant income disparities in Hamburg extend beyond the city average, with some neighborhoods having income levels as low as 17,100 euros per tax payer.
