States are actively scrutinizing an assault on minors that occurred in the region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
On a Friday night, as per the investigators' account, a band of around 20 young individuals assaulted two Ghanaian girls, aged eight and ten, in a public space. One of the attackers is claimed to have struck the eight-year-old in the face. When the girls' parents arrived, they too were viciously attacked. The girls' father endured minor injuries.
The Rostock Police detailed that the group was comprised solely of adolescent and teenage individuals. It appears that up to eight of them took part in the family's assault. The police reported that racially charged slurs were hurled even after the arrival of the response teams.
The authorities are currently conducting an investigation, looking into charges such as aggravated assault and inciting hate speech. On Monday, they called upon the public for assistance. Images and videos could be submitted via the police tip portal, they declared. Witnesses could also reach out to the Criminal Investigation Department in Wismar or any other police station.
The attack elicited widespread shock and indignation. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) referred to the incident as "a vile display of hate and abhorrent cruelty". Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister-President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) expressed her dismay that children were being targeted in the country. She emphasized that the "deplorable act" must have consequences.
