Western Pomerania-Greifswald - State wants to sell Karlsburg Castle
The state government wants to sell the Karlsburg castle ensemble (Vorpommern-Greifswald district) for 250,000 euros. According to state parliament documents, the prospective buyer is Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn, who already owns Ulrichshusen Castle (Mecklenburg Lake District) and has developed it into a hotel and central venue for the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.
According to the documents, an expert report estimated the market value of the castle, park and outbuildings at around one million euros in 2019. However, it quickly became apparent during the bidding process that this sum could not be realized. The most promising bidder had initially offered 200,000 euros, but then withdrew, citing increased construction costs and what he saw as incalculable monument protection requirements.
According to the paper, von Maltzahn has also agreed to special regulations due to possible contaminated sites and monument protection requirements. Accordingly, he can have the property examined for soil contamination and deal with the monument protection authority before purchasing it. He has until the end of 2024 to do this.
According to the state, it has no use for the castle ensemble and therefore wants to sell it. The state parliament must give its consent because it is a state property of particular importance.
According to the documents, the plan is to revitalize the castle ensemble. The plan is to use it as a training center for medical professions, as living quarters, particularly for elderly people in need of care and support, or for community purposes and tourist events. The Karlsburg Diabetes Clinic is located in the immediate vicinity of the castle and park.
