Tesla production expansion - State wants to make final decision on Tesla expansion by fall

After conditionally approving Tesla's expansion plan for its only European factory in Germany, the country is expected to give a final green light by fall at the earliest. A spokesperson for the Environmental Agency (LfU) announced this on Friday in response to an inquiry. However, only the first part of the permit application has been submitted to the LfU at present. A decision on this is expected in the summer, "realistically in the fall," they added.

Tesla can begin construction early

However, Tesla does not have to wait long for construction to begin. This week, the LfU granted a preliminary approval. With this, the electric vehicle manufacturer can start early with initial construction works in Grünheide near Berlin.

The project involves expanding production on the existing plant site without clearing forests, not the controversial expansion plan to build a freight terminal for the construction of a freight terminal. Tesla aims to double the planned production of 500,000 cars in Grünheide near Berlin to one million cars per year. The latest calculations show that around 300,000 cars have been achieved.

Environmental associations are skeptical

Environmentalists and residents have major concerns about the production expansion and extension due to the fact that part of the plant is located in a water protection area. The carmaker plans to build another large hall and optimize existing production facilities. The capacity of battery storage production is also to be increased.

At the early construction phase, the Ministry stated that it concerns a logistics area for new cars, including underground power lines and the construction of staircases at the press shop and solar panels on roofs.
