State subsidies for healthcare expenditure increased significantly in coronavirus year 2022

Causes were therefore federal subsidies for pandemic response - among them compensation payments for hospitals as well as costs for vaccination centers and coronavirus testing. In addition, the federal government supported health insurance companies that year to keep the average additional contribution stable. The total health expenditures in 2022 amounted to around 489 billion Euro, with state subsidies making up 17.6 percent of this.

According to the Statistical Federal Office, state subsidies for health expenditures approximately doubled during the Coronavirus pandemic as a whole, increasing by around 91 percent between 2019 and 2022. Health expenditures are generally primarily financed through social insurance contributions from employees and employers. In 2022, employers contributed 116.4 billion Euro and employees contributed 114.6 billion Euro.
