Flood - State still has no overview of flood damage
One month after the flood in Baden-Württemberg, the state government still does not have a clear overview of the damages caused by the storm. "The assessment of damages is ongoing, we only have estimates so far," said Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann in Stuttgart. He appealed to the cities, municipalities, and districts to report damages as soon as possible, so that a comprehensive overview can be obtained, as the Green politician stated. Moreover, it is still unclear which damages will be insured. For these, the state would not be liable, according to Kretschmann.
The Ministerial Council dealt with flood aid. The ministries should now check whether 29 existing funding programs could also be used for the rebuilding after the flood damages, said Kretschmann. For example, if a county road is damaged or destroyed, a funding program for municipal road construction comes into play for the rebuilding.
Should there be further need for aid, the cabinet will submit a proposal for an additional aid package in the amount of up to 25 million Euros for the repair of communal damages, the Interior Ministry announced.
The devastating storm led to significant flood damage across Baden-Württemberg, incurring losses in the millions. Winfried Kretschmann, the state's Minister-President, emphasized the importance of promptly reporting flood damage to obtain a comprehensive overview. Despite the ongoing assessment, the extent of insured damages remains unclear, with Kretschmann suggesting that the state would not be liable for uninsured damages. In an effort to aid in the rebuilding process, the Ministerial Council is reviewing 29 existing funding programs that could potentially be utilized for flood recovery. Should further aid be required, the cabinet plans to propose an additional aid package worth up to 25 million Euros for communal damage repair, affecting areas primarily in the Southwest of Germany, like Stuttgart.
