Authorities - State Sports Association rejects accusations by the Court of Auditors

The Brandenburg State Sports Association (LSB) has rejected accusations by the State Court of Auditors that the top management of the association was paid too much. The LSB announced on Thursday that the Ministry of Sport had received an external expert opinion on the assessment of the board allowances. The public sector pay scale also provides for corresponding allowances, but this is difficult to compare due to the personal liability of the board. "Apart from this, the level of LSB board salaries is in the lower segment compared to corresponding board salaries of state companies in Brandenburg."

The auditors criticized the fact that, in addition to their salaries, the LSB board had received what they considered to be inadmissible payments such as board allowances of between 900 and 2000 euros, travel expenses and, in one case, a monthly pension payment. This violated the prohibition of better employment for employees of publicly funded institutions. In addition, senior LSB employees are still managing directors of subsidiaries.

The association also considers the criticism of secondary employment at subsidiaries to be inappropriate. "The people involved developed the ideas and were entrusted with setting up the companies and implementing the concepts as managing directors from the outset," the LSB stated. "The companies operate without subsidies from the state's sports budget and achieved positive results both in terms of content and financially."

The auditors also criticized LSB-financed visits to sporting events, hospitality and a group trip to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In the case of other trips, the reasons for invitations and the beneficiaries were not or incorrectly documented, according to the Court of Auditors. The association had already conceded that it would be more detailed in its documentation of trips, gifts and events in future.
