State security investigates after new knife found on playground
After another knife was found on a playground in Bremen, the police have launched an investigation. A six-year-old child discovered the kitchen knife while playing on a sandy playground at a day-care center in Neustadt, the police announced on Wednesday. The child remained unharmed. The knife reportedly had anti-Semitic and far-right inscriptions and symbols on it. The special commission named "Playground" of the Bremen police is now investigating a connection to similar, earlier knife finds.
Since May 2020, knives and sharp objects have repeatedly been found on playgrounds in Bremen's Neustadt district, some of which were attached to playground equipment with adhesive tape. According to the officers, they were positioned in such a way that they could have injured children playing there. The police then stepped up their checks of playgrounds.
Investigators also assume that the knives were found in connection with letters containing suspicious powder sent to party offices. The letters had been sent to offices of various parties in Bremen and Göttingen. The police assume that one and the same perpetrator is responsible for the crimes.
Following the new discovery on Wednesday, the criminal investigation department is now looking for witnesses who observed suspicious persons in Bochumer Straße between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.
The discovery of the knife with extremist symbols raises concerns about the spread of hate speech in kindergartens. This incident of crime adds to the series of knife finds linked to acts of extremism in Bremen's Neustadt district.
