- State security investigated after shooting at SPD constituency office
After an attack on the constituency office of SPD MP Lars Düsterhöft in Berlin-Oberschöneweide, the state protection department of the police is investigating. It's about property damage with a political background, a police spokesperson said upon request. Previously, RBB and the "Tagesspiegel" had reported.
The politician published photos of the attack on his office on Facebook. Shots can be seen in the window where a picture of the MP hangs, and a red inscription on the adjacent house wall. "Shots at my portrait and slogans on the wall are criminal acts that deeply affect and shock me. What's the next step, someone standing with a pistol in front of me and pulling the trigger?", he wrote.
According to the spokesperson, the police were called to the constituency office in Siemensstraße on Tuesday morning. According to Düsterhöft, four shots were fired. Furthermore, a red inscription was sprayed on a house wall next to the office: "We condemn Germany for genocide." (Translation: We condemn Germany for genocide.) "For me, it's clear that this refers to the current situation in the Middle East," said the MP.
Horror in politics
The SPD faction in the Berlin House of Representatives condemned the attack. "Whoever fires shots at the office of a democratically elected MP and thus marks the mandate holder as a potential murder victim, acts in a deeply inhuman, criminal way and consciously opposes the basic principles of our free democratic order," the faction said.
"Dear Lars, we stand firmly by your side!" wrote Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) on the online platform X. Düsterhöft is the faction speaker for social affairs, care, and people with disabilities. The Senate also expressed horror: "This is a heinous act that cannot be justified in any way," spokesperson Christine Richter said. "Attacks on parliamentarians are attacks on democratic society as a whole."
The politician decided to host a rally to raise awareness about the attack, inviting local residents and fellow politicians. The event was intended to send a strong message against violence and promote unity.
In response to the incident, several party members reached out to Düsterhoeft to offer their support and solidarity, expressing that such acts are unacceptable in a democratic society.
