State parliament lifts immunity of SPD member of parliament
Lower Saxony's state parliament has unanimously lifted the immunity of SPD MP Jörn Domeier following a request from the public prosecutor's office. Domeier himself also voted in favor of this step on Wednesday. The charges against him were not disclosed in advance. However, such a resolution by the state parliament is currently only necessary for proceedings relating to three offenses under the German Criminal Code: insult, defamation and libel against political figures. Domeier had announced that he would cooperate with the public prosecutor's office.
The unanimous decision by Lower Saxony's state parliament to lift Domeier's parliamentary immunity was a significant step in the legal proceedings against him. Despite being an SPD MP, Domeier supported this motion in the Parliament.
