State parliament in Rhineland-Palatinate elects successor to Minister President Dreyer

Dreyer announced three weeks ago, after eleven years in office, her retirement as Minister-President and explained the step with waning energy. Schweitzer had been considered a potential successor for a long time. He was SPD Landtagsfraktion leader from 2014 to 2021 and has been a state minister since then. The next Rhineland-Palatinate state election will take place regularly in the spring of 2026. The only change in the cabinet was announced by Schweitzer: he will take over Dörte Schall's previous position as Vice-President of the North Rhine-Westphalia SPD.

Dreyer, as the outgoing Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, cited her dwindling energy as the reason for her retirement after eleven years in office. For quite some time, Alexander Schweitzer had been perceived as a potential Successor for the SPD in Parliament. Previously serving as the SPD Landtagsfraktion leader from 2014 to 2021 and subsequently becoming a state minister, Schweitzer will now assume Dörte Schall's former role as Vice-President of the North Rhine-Westphalia SPD within the SPD Parliamentary group.
