Municipalities - State parliament decides to merge further municipalities
The Thuringian state parliament has given the green light for further municipalities in the state to merge. A corresponding law was passed in parliament on Thursday. This time, 29 municipalities are affected, which will merge to form nine new municipalities. The state will pay around 21.4 million euros for this. The AfD parliamentary group voted against.
The new mergers affect municipalities in the districts of Eichsfeld, Unstrut-Hainich, Greiz, Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Wartburgkreis, Saale-Holzland-Kreis and the district of Gotha.
Left-wing MP Katja Maurer pointed out the demographic change in Thuringia. There are too many small-scale structures in the Free State. In some cases, local authorities are unable to hire specialist staff to take advantage of funding programs. "We are now moving towards a state that has larger, more stable municipalities. And I think that's really good."
