Politics - State parliament convenes for last session in 2023
The state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is meeting today in Schwerin for its last plenary session of the year. The MPs will once again be discussing the situation in the state's daycare centers. They have been presented with a popular initiative calling for an improvement in the childcare ratio. On Thursday, parliament debated an amendment to the law at first reading. As a first step, the ratio of specialist staff to children in daycare centers is to be changed from the current 1:15 to 1:14. The supporters of the popular initiative are calling for 1:10, and 1:4 in crèches.
At the request of the SPD, Left Party and CDU coalition parties, MPs will also discuss the federal government's planned hospital reform. Critics see the existence of small clinics in rural areas in particular at risk. Other topics include the expansion of green electricity production, the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and the future of the controversial climate protection foundation.
