Real estate - State parliament approves sale of Karlsburg Castle
At its meeting on Friday, the state parliament in Schwerin approved the sale of the state-owned castle ensemble in Karlsburg (Vorpommern-Greifswald). However, at 250,000 euros, the price falls well short of earlier expectations. As Culture Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) said, experts had estimated the market value of the castle, including the park and outbuildings, at around one million euros in 2019. However, the bidding process had shown that no one wanted to pay this sum. It turned out that 200,000 euros was a realistic figure. However, one interested party withdrew from the purchase, citing increased construction costs.
The castle will now go to Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn, who already owns Ulrichshusen Castle (Mecklenburg Lake District), among others. He has developed this into a hotel and a central venue for the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.
During the GDR era, the property in Karlsburg was home to the Institute for Diabetes Research and Treatment. Until 2019, the castle was used by Greifswald University Medicine, which then returned it to the state.
According to Martin, the buyer wants to use the castle ensemble as a training center for medical professions. In addition, living quarters for elderly people in need of care and support or for community purposes and tourist events are to be created. The renovation and use of the building in line with its listed status is guaranteed. "The interests of the state are secured by the negotiated purchase agreement," said Martin with conviction.
