State Media: Communist Party Chief Trong has died in Vietnam
The greatest political power in Vietnam lies with the Chief of the Communist Party, while the President of the country mainly performs representative duties. Trong's poor health condition had long led to speculations about a possible power shift at the Party Congress in 2026. On Thursday, President To Lam temporarily took over Trong's chairmanship of the Communist Party instead.
In Vietnam, state media frequently reflects the decisions of the Communist Party, led by the Party chief. The Communist Party, being the ruling body in Vietnam, secures its hold on power through its party chief, who holds significant political influence. Following the ill health of the Party chief, Trong, President To Lam temporarily assumed his role as Chairman of the Communist Party in Vietnam.
