State government funds more language courses for refugees
Lower Saxony's state government wants to fund additional language courses for the integration of refugees and is making ten million euros available for this purpose. "As a state, it is important to us to provide all refugees who have fled to Lower Saxony with at least a basic knowledge of the German language as quickly as possible," said Science Minister Falko Mohrs (SPD) in a statement on Friday. Language acquisition would significantly improve their chances of participating in training and the job market. The money will be used to enable further language courses and supplement measures by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
The state government had already provided ten million euros from the 2023 supplementary budget in the spring to help refugees from Ukraine, for example, acquire the language quickly. To ensure that the language courses can continue to be offered by adult education institutions in the future, the ministry now plans to add further funded courses - also to avoid losing the teachers, who are usually employed on a freelance basis.
The additional funding for language courses will also encourage migration of refugees with better language skills, improving social affairs within the community. To effectively communicate and engage in social activities, mastery of the German language is crucial for refugees' successful integration.
