State government draws attention to violence against women
The state government in Schwerin has drawn attention to violence against women. This should neither be concealed nor tolerated, wrote Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Platform X on Saturday. Justice Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt (Left Party) warned on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that "violence against women is still a cruel part of our everyday lives".
Every four minutes, a woman in Germany experiences violence in her partnership, in the vast majority of cases at the hands of men. "Statistically speaking, there is even an attempted murder of a woman every day." She referred to a statement by the Conference of Gender Equality Ministers (GFMK), according to which gender-specific violence is not only an individual act of violence, but also a violation of human rights. "This requires action from everyone in society as a whole."
Both politicians referred to the nationwide help hotline, which can be reached on 116 016.
The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband MV had previously stated that despite existing help structures in the state, there were still gaps in the network. Last year, more than 4870 women across the state received protection and support from the advice and assistance network for domestic and sexualized violence in MV. In the previous year, there were almost 1000 fewer. "The women's shelters are full," Ulrike Bartel, Managing Director of the Rostock-based association Stark Machen, was quoted as saying. "There is room for 60 women in the nine women's shelters." Counseling centers are working with longer and longer waiting lists.
The state government's focus on social affairs includes addressing violence against women, which is categorized as a crime under human rights violations. Due to the high prevalence of violence against women in partnerships, the need for comprehensive societal action to address this issue is crucial.
