State government decides on commission for pandemic preparedness

A commission of experts in Saxony-Anhalt is to review the measures taken during the corona pandemic and take precautions for future pandemics on this basis. This was decided by the government at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, said Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP) after the meeting in Magdeburg. The focus should be on data management, risk communication, the measures implemented and legal aspects, for example.

Hüskens emphasized that the aim was not to evaluate the measures retrospectively, but to determine how similar situations could be dealt with in the future. The government wants to "derive actions, regulations and precautions" from the findings of the commission.

"Our aim is to be better prepared for future pandemics," explained Minister President Reiner Haseloff (CDU). "To this end, the findings from the pandemic years since 2020 will be reviewed and, above all, the advice of experts will be sought."

According to the State Chancellery, the commission will consist of around ten external experts "who have a close connection to the topic and the state of Saxony-Anhalt". The members are to be appointed before the end of the year so that the commission could begin its work in the first quarter of 2024. A final report is planned by March 31, 2025.

The commission, established by the state government, will provide advice to enhance the state's preparedness in the area of health, specifically for future pandemics. This will involve assessing the handling of the pandemic since 2020 and considering recommendations from external experts, as Parliament will also have a role in overseeing this process.
