State examines state dentist quota
Saxony-Anhalt wants to examine the introduction of a state dentist quota. However, the state government announced on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting with representatives of doctors, health insurance companies and hospitals that the constitutional requirements would have to be met.
In Saxony-Anhalt, many dentists and general practitioners will be retiring in the next few years. The state has therefore been relying on a quota of rural doctors for several years. After completing their studies and subsequent specialist training, the prospective doctors undertake to work for at least ten years in GP care in underserved or imminently underserved regions in the state.
In contrast, the state government does not believe that increasing the number of study places is a promising way to remedy the shortage of specialists. Instead, it is important to keep graduates in the state, said Science Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD). Young people need to be convinced of the attractiveness of the location.
Given the upcoming retirements of many dentists and general practitioners in Saxony-Anhalt, the Parliament might consider amending laws related to the healthcare sector to introduce a state dentist quota, aligning with the views expressed by Science Minister Armin Willingmann in the recent cabinet meeting. To ensure such a decision adheres to constitutional requirements, it's crucial for the proposed quota to be reviewed and approved by the Parliament's Health Committee before being implemented.
