Besides the parties already represented in the parliament, the Alliance for Germany with Sahra Wagenkhecht (BSW), which polled at 15 percent in Sachsen in the latest surveys, the far-right Free Saxony, and the conservative Values Union led by the former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen, will be participating in the election.

The lists of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), which had not been recognized as a party before, as well as the Party of Humanists (PdH) and the Party for scholarly research on aging, which could not submit the required thousand signatures, were rejected. The list of the Animal Welfare Party was rejected for formal reasons. In total, 23 parties and organizations submitted corresponding state lists.

In Saxony, a new state parliament will be elected simultaneously with Thuringia on September 1st. In surveys, the AfD has been in the lead for months. However, the lead over the CDU, led by Minister President Michael Kretschmer, has recently shrunk significantly. The CDU currently governs in the state in coalition with the SPD and the Greens.
