Education - State creates 350 new study places for primary school teachers
More teachers for primary and special schools can be trained in North Rhine-Westphalia. The state government announced on Wednesday that 465 additional study places have been created at eight universities for the current winter semester. Around 350 of these are for elementary school teachers, 80 are directly aimed at teaching special needs education. A further 35 places combine both subjects. 31.5 million euros have been earmarked in next year's budget for the expansion - around 11.4 million euros more than in the current year.
The state government wants to combat the considerable shortage of teachers with its study place offensive. According to the Ministry of Education, more than 6,700 teaching positions at the almost 5,000 public schools in the state were vacant in the summer.
With the newly created bachelor's degree places, a total of 4720 new students can now start each year in primary school teaching or special education. The subjects can be studied in Bielefeld, Dortmund, Duisburg-Essen, Cologne, Münster, Paderborn, Siegen and Wuppertal. Over 20,000 Bachelor's and Master's students are currently enrolled.
