Complaint by the AfD - State Court hears complaints about the election in Bremen
The Federal Constitutional Court will now determine if the citizens' election in Bremen needs to be held again. "No decision will be made on these matters today", a spokeswoman of the Federal Constitutional Court stated. It is still unclear when the court will reach a verdict.
Several AfD members are challenging the election due to the party not being allowed to participate. The AfD had submitted two separate proposals with candidates each, but only one list per party is permitted. The complaints are being handled separately for Bremen and Bremerhaven.
Additionally, the Federal Constitutional Court will decide if the determination of the election results with software was lawful. The election review court concluded recently that the election should not be repeated despite several issues. Whether this decision stands is now being deliberated by the Federal Constitutional Court.
During the citizens' election in May 2023, the SPD, led by Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte, emerged as the strongest force. The SPD, Greens, and Left party have agreed to continue their coalition. This unique alliance has been governing in West Germany since 2019.
The AfD members' complaint regarding the citizenship election in Bremen, where they were not allowed to participate fully, is being handled by the State Court. The AfD had presented two lists with candidates, but only one is permitted per party, leading to their challenge. The Federal Constitutional Court is also deliberating on whether the election results determination using software was lawful, as per the election review court's decision not to repeat the election despite identified issues.
