State Constitutional Court - State Constitutional Court to get new judges soon

At the long-awaited filling of the judge positions at the Berlin Constitutional Court, a solution is emerging. According to dpa information, six judges, including the new deputy president, are expected to be elected at the Land parliament on Thursday.

Then, the parliamentarians come together for their last regular plenary session before the summer break. The faction leaders of CDU, SPD, Greens, and The Left have agreed on the candidates, as it was consistently reported from faction circles.

These candidates will introduce themselves to the factions at the State Parliament on Tuesday afternoon. The names are still confidential. A two-thirds majority is required for the election in the State Parliament. The filling of the judge positions is considered overdue.

Talks between the factions have been ongoing for months

Talks between the four factions have been ongoing for months, but they could not agree. Their common goal was to reach an agreement before the summer break. The Left and Greens in the State Parliament had already demanded in a letter in January that progress be made on this issue because the situation was no longer bearable.

A part of the overall nine judges has been acting in office for a long time, as their seven-year term has already expired. Two positions are vacant.

According to media reports, the CDU faction had problems with the Greens' proposal for filling one of the positions. There were reportedly significant objections to the proposed candidate. The Greens then withdrew their proposal and submitted a new one.

The disagreement between the CDU and the Greens concerning the judgeship at the Berlin Constitutional Court was eventually resolved, allowing for the consideration of a new proposal. This development took place within the House of Representatives, where decisions regarding the appointment of judges are made.

The SPD, alongside other parties in the Berlin Parliament, acknowledged the significance of filling the vacant judge positions at the State Constitutional Court, emphasizing the necessity of a swift and unanimous decision before the summer break.

Once the new candidate for the judgeship is confirmed by the required two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, they will join the SPD, CDU, and other party members in the Berlin Constitutional Court, contributing to the maintenance of a functioning court of law.

As a result of this resolution, all six judge positions, including the deputy president's, will be filled at the Berlin Constitutional Court, which will prevent further delay at the State Constitutional Court in Berlin.
