University medicine in planning - State becomes sponsor of the Carl Thiem Clinic in Cottbus
Cottbus' Carl Thiem Clinic is to be transferred to the ownership of the state of Brandenburg. This was decided by the city councillors on Wednesday, as jointly announced by the city and the Ministry of Science. This should pave the way for the establishment of university medicine in Cottbus.
Mayor Tobias Schick(SPD) spoke of a historic day. The Carl-Thiem-Klinikum is on the way to becoming a modern university hospital with research and teaching as well as medical studies to attract doctors. More than two billion euros are to be invested and more than 1000 additional jobs created.
Science Minister Manja Schüle (SPD) said in a press release: "Another milestone has been reached." She spoke of a "mega-deal" from which the city and the people could also benefit. "The medical university is not just a UFO landing in Lusatia - it is a project in which the entire region is actively involved and highly committed."
The first students are due to start at Lusatia's own medical university in the winter semester of 2026/27, as was announced months ago in Potsdam.

The state of Brandenburg, as the new sponsor, will oversee the transition of the Carl Thiem Clinic from Cottbus' municipalities to its ownership. The SPD, both in the city council and at the state level, have been instrumental in this development, with Mayor Tobias Schick and Science Minister Manja Schüle leading the charge. This shift towards university medicine in Cottbus is expected to significantly boost local hospitals and create numerous job opportunities, further benefiting the municipalities and the greater Brandenburg region.
