Processes - Start of trial: Fatal shooting on Nuremberg street

A man is said to have shot two friends several times right outside a pub in Nuremberg. One of them later died in hospital. From Wednesday, a 29-year-old man will therefore have to answer for murder and attempted murder at the regional court in Nuremberg. According to a court spokeswoman, special security precautions are in place for the trial. The chamber has scheduled a total of 29 trial days until March.

According to the indictment, there had been an argument between the suspect from Turkey and the two men, aged 30 and 35, before the crime last October. Afterwards, the accused is said to have arranged to meet the two later victims in a café in order to allegedly reconcile with them. When they arrived, he is said to have immediately pulled out a small-caliber gun and shot them at least four times. In a scuffle with the 35-year-old, the accused is said to have fired at him a further time at close range. The victim nevertheless managed to wrest the gun from him. The 35-year-old was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The other man died there the same day.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting. The police cordoned off a large area, and officers with submachine guns were also deployed. The bloody deed in an area with sports bars and other pubs, where many people are out and about, caused horror and great uncertainty in Nuremberg - above all because it could not be ruled out that the possible shooter was still hiding in Bavaria's second largest city.

However, the investigators did not see any immediate danger to the population because the shots had been fired deliberately and not indiscriminately. Nevertheless, they warned against approaching the man independently: they considered the suspect to be dangerous and assumed that he could be armed.

The police searched for the man for months - with photos and names. They also searched buildings in Frankfurt am Main, where there were indications that he had been staying in the meantime. A special task force finally arrested the suspect in a hotel room in Rimini, Italy, at the end of January. He has been in custody in Germany since mid-February.
