Crime - Start of trial against police officers postponed at short notice

The start of the trial against two police officers for several cases of assault in office at Aurich District Court has been postponed at short notice. A defense lawyer for one of the defendants called in sick shortly before the start of the trial on Monday morning, according to a court spokeswoman. The continuation date scheduled for December 11 was also canceled. The trial may now begin on December 14.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the two 26 and 32-year-old defendants, both with the rank of police commissioner, of assault in office. The cases are said to have occurred during police operations in Emden in 2021. During one of the operations in May 2021, both officers from the Emden police station were on duty. According to the indictment, one man was so seriously injured that he had to be treated in hospital for twelve days.
