Justice - Start of trial against Björn Höcke in Halle still unclear
The start of the trial against AfD politician Björn Höcke at the regional court in Halle is still unclear. "Not even the files from the Naumburg Higher Regional Court are back yet" in Halle, explained a spokeswoman for the regional court on Wednesday when asked by the German Press Agency. Because the documents are missing, it is still unclear when the trial can be opened.
Höcke has to answer to the court in Halle for the alleged use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. He is accused of using a banned slogan of the so-called Sturmabteilung (SA), the paramilitary fighting organization of the NSDAP, in a speech in Merseburg (Saalekreis) on 29 May 2021.
Höcke is said to have known that the last part of the slogan "Everything for our homeland, everything for Saxony-Anhalt, everything for Germany" was a banned slogan, according to the accusation. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Thuringia classifies Höcke as a right-wing extremist. In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, his party is considered a confirmed right-wing extremist.
At the end of November, the Naumburg Higher Regional Court upheld an appeal by the public prosecutor's office in Halle. The decision of the Higher Regional Court was preceded by a decision of the Regional Court of Halle, according to which the main proceedings were to be conducted before the Local Court of Merseburg.
