Leisure time - Start of the ski season: ridge trail in the Ore Mountains groomed
After plenty of fresh snow, Saxony heralds the start of the ski season. The official kick-off will be celebrated on Friday in Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge. The lifts will be switched on there at 10.00 am. Over the past few days, the slopes have been covered with artificial snow in addition to the natural snow, so that the pistes could be well prepared, as the operator informed the German Press Agency on request. In Augustusburg, skiers were able to warm up for the new season on the upper slope on Thursday. Cross-country skiers will also get their money's worth at the weekend - that's when the popular Kammloipe trail in the Erzgebirge and Vogtland opens.
Preparations are also in full swing elsewhere. Saxony's largest alpine ski area on the Fichtelberg is currently scheduled to open in the middle of next week. From December 6, skiers will be able to use the main slope, grove, race course and slope 2, said Constantin Gläß, Managing Director of the lift company LGO, to the German Press Agency on Thursday. With a brief interruption, the slopes have also been covered with artificial snow since Saturday and the pistes have been made ready for take-off, confirmed René Lötzsch, head of the Fichtelberg Schwebebahn. Only the slopes on the Himmelsleiter need a little more maintenance, but should then also be open to skiers on the second weekend of Advent.
By the second Advent, skiing fun should also be in full swing on the neighboring Keilberg in the Czech Republic. The homepage lists December 8 as the start date. In Eibenstock, there is also great joy about the winter weather. This weekend, however, skiers on the Adlerfelsen will not yet get their money's worth. According to the operator, the plan is to start skiing in the middle or end of next week. Ski fans in the Zittau Mountains, on the other hand, will have to be patient. The snow cover is not yet sufficient for public lift operation and the ground has not yet frozen, explained Tilo Knöbel from the Lausche Alpine Ski Club on request.
Winter sports enthusiasts who don't want to whizz down the slopes on skis or snowboards will also get their money's worth in the Ore Mountains. Most of the trails on the Fichtelberg are already open, as are most of the ski and winter hiking trails. Saturday is also the official start of the season for the Kammloipe in the Erzgebirge and Vogtland. The trails and access routes will be groomed from Friday, according to the responsible working group. The Kammloipe - a popular destination for cross-country skiers - runs for around 36 kilometers from Schöneck to Johanngeorgenstadt. There are also connecting trails in the region.

The start of the ski season in Saxony is highly anticipated, with Oberwiesenthal and Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge being popular destinations. The German Press Agency reported that Altenberg will officially kick off the season on Friday, with slopes already groomed and additional artificial snow added. Skiers in Augustusburg got a taste of the new season earlier this week. Cross-country skiers can also enjoy the Kammloipe trail in the Erzgebirge and Vogtland from the weekend.
Preparations for the ski season are also underway at the largest alpine ski area on Fichtelberg, which is expected to open in the middle of next week. The main slope, grove, race course, and slope 2 will be open from December 6. The neighboring Keilberg in the Czech Republic is also gearing up for the new season, with a planned start date of December 8.
Although the Eibenstock ski area will not be open this weekend, skiers on the Adlerfelsen can expect to start skiing in the middle or end of next week. In the Zittau Mountains, the snow cover and ground conditions are not yet sufficient for public lift operation.
Winter sports enthusiasts who prefer non-ski activities can also enjoy the Ore Mountains. Fichtelberg already has most of its trails open for ski and winter hiking, and the Kammloipe will officially open on Saturday. The trail runs for 36 kilometers and has connecting trails in the region.
Skiers visiting Oberwiesenthal can enjoy the Fichtelberg ski area, while those bound for Altenberg can visit the Altenberg ski area. Eibenstock and Keilberg also have their own ski areas for visitors to enjoy.
