Start of the season on Wasserkuppe and Hoherodskopf

Skiing and tobogganing good: there is plenty of snow in the lift areas of the Rhön and Vogelsberg at the start of the winter sports season. And that won't change much at first - it remains cold in the mountains.

Winter sports - Start of the season on Wasserkuppe and Hoherodskopf

On the snow-covered Wasserkuppe, leisure sports enthusiasts were able to enjoy the beautiful side of winter on the first weekend of Advent. Several lifts opened on Hesse's highest mountain (950 meters) at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. "It's busy, but not overcrowded," said Jeremias Kümpel from Wiegand Erlebnisberge GmbH, which operates the ski and toboggan arenas on the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and Hoherodskopf in the Vogelsberg, to the German Press Agency. The snow depth on the Märchenwiese run was reported to be 40 centimetres.

The new ski season has also started on the Hoherodskopf. The lift at the Rennwiese started at 10.00 am. It was already quite busy there too, said Kümpel. Thanks to the heavy snowfall over the past few days, everything has now gone very quickly. Some of the teams have been working into the night so that the lifts can transport the first winter sports enthusiasts this weekend.

Kümpel was confident that stable skiing operations would be possible on the Wasserkuppe for at least the next two to three weeks. On the Hoherodskopf, which is around 200 meters lower than the Wasserkuppe, this will only become clear in the next few days.

Skiing has been possible on a side slope near the Wasserkuppe, the so-called Zuckerfeld, since Friday. In the North Hessian winter sports region of Willingen, skiing is due to start on the second weekend of Advent.

According to the police, there was normal traffic on the access roads to the Wasserkuppe and Hoherodskopf on Saturday. The same applied to the roads to Feldberg in the Taunus, which is always popular with winter sports enthusiasts in the Rhine-Main region.

Snow and frost will continue to be an issue in Hesse in the coming days. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), it will be cloudy to very cloudy on Sunday. There will be mainly no precipitation during the day. A few snowflakes could only fall in the peaks. The highest temperatures during the day are expected to be between -1 and 1 degree, in the higher mountain regions around -2 degrees. In the night to Monday, snowfall and icy conditions are to be expected in northern Hesse. The lows will be between -7 and -4 degrees, in the mountains even as low as -9 degrees.

Monday will be very cloudy, with snow falling in some areas. In the evening, new snow clouds will move in from the west. There will be light permafrost of -3 to 0 degrees in the north-east, with temperatures climbing to 2 degrees in the south-west. It will be overcast on Tuesday night. There will be precipitation, changing from snow to rain from the west. According to the DWD, there is a threat of freezing rain with black ice at times. Temperatures in the west will be 0 degrees, in the east a light frost of -3 degrees is expected.
