DFB Cup - St. Pauli's goalkeeper slapstick moment: "That happens"

After his slapstick performance in the DFB Cup, FC St. Pauli goalkeeper Sascha Burchert remained relaxed. "It happens," said the 34-year-old on Tuesday evening after the second division leaders' 4:1 (1:1) win in the round of 16 at regional league club FC 08 Homburg. With the score at 1:0, St. Pauli's cup keeper (28th minute) made a curious mistake that was reminiscent of HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes' blunder in the Hamburg city derby at the Millerntor a few days earlier. The Kiezclub profited on that occasion.

In Homburg, a free-kick return pass from Karol Mets caused the ball to bounce slightly due to an unevenness in the pitch. Burchert missed the ball with his foot. The ball bounced towards goal. Homburg's Markus Mendler seized the opportunity, squeezed between Burchert, who was still jumping after him, and the ball and slotted in the equalizer. "No reproach. A mistake in the box," said midfielder Marcel Hartel behind his goalkeeper.

Despite his relaxed attitude, the 34-year-old Burchert was also self-critical: "I think I might have solved a few too many situations with one contact. Perhaps two contacts would have been appropriate. Then I would have been more involved in the action."

In the city derby (2:2) on Friday, HSV colleague Heuer-Fernandes had suffered a similar mishap. The visitors took a short kick via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos. After Ramos passed to Heuer Fernandes, the ball bounced just in front of goal. The goalkeeper tried to clear the ball out of the penalty area - but the ball flew into his own net.

Burchert's mistake was ultimately just a comical side note on Tuesday evening. With goals from Hauke Wahl (24), Elias Saad (64), Marcel Hartel (69) and Johannes Eggestein (73), FC St. Pauli progressed to the last eight and collected €1.7 million. "We said at half-time that it would be a game of patience," said coach Fabian Hürzeler. "After the 2:1, the knot was broken."
