St. Pauli sports director does not want to overestimate lead in table
Sporting director Andreas Bornemann does not want to overestimate the current lead of his FC St. Pauli in the 2nd Bundesliga. "That simply doesn't say anything," Bornemann told the online portal "Transfermarkt" (Thursday). The 53-year-old functionary added: "We're not saying that we're only at the top by luck or chance. We are that self-confident. We've worked for it at all levels. But there are so many imponderables such as injuries, suspensions or absences that can have an impact."
The Kiezkickers will host third-placed Hannover 96 on Friday (18:30/Sky) for the top clash of matchday 13. One day later, the teams in fifth and second place will play each other on Saturday (13:00/Sky) in Holstein Kiel and Hamburger SV. With a view to the city rivals and their so far unsuccessful attempts to return to the Bundesliga, Bornemann said: "We have the great advantage of living in a city where, in recent years, we have been taught a lot about what it means to be slightly ahead after a third or half of the season."
The decision to let coach Timo Schultz go before the start of the second half of last season and replace him with Fabian Hürzeler was not an easy one, Bornemann continued. In view of the success of the 30-year-old, who led Hamburg to the top of the table, the sporting director also said: "We can justifiably claim that the decision to appoint him was an absolute stroke of luck. But St. Pauli is also a stroke of luck for Fabian."
Despite their lead in Bundesliga 2, FC St. Pauli's sporting director Andreas Bornemann emphasizes the importance of remaining cautious. "Even though we're leading in Bundesliga 2, it's crucial not to underestimate the role of factors like injuries, suspensions, or absences that could potentially alter our position," Bornemann mentioned in an interview with Transfermarkt.
In the upcoming match, FC St. Pauli will face Hannover 96 in a top-clash in Bundesliga 2, further highlighting the importance of maintaining focus and avoiding complacency, given their position in Soccer's Bundesliga 2 table and their city rivals' struggles to ascend to the Bundesliga.
