St. Pauli pro Hartel: Duty to "go a bit further"

Marcel Hartel wants to use his experience as a promotion hero at second-division soccer club FC St. Pauli to get the league leaders into the Bundesliga. Since Hartel moved to the Hamburg club in the summer of 2021, he has tried to use the "experience I've gained in my career here", said the 27-year-old midfielder on Tuesday. "I'm trying to do that a bit more this year because I simply have this certain responsibility and want to have it. Accordingly, I am also obliged to lead the way a little."

Hartel succeeded in gaining promotion to the Bundesliga with Union Berlin and Arminia Bielefeld. In the current season, Hartel is deputizing for captain Jackson Irvine together with Eric Smith.

Hamburg are the only unbeaten team so far this season. However, there is no feeling of invincibility, said Hartel. "You can see that you don't always do everything perfectly for 90 minutes every week, but that we also have our issues that we need to work on." However, Hartel said that being top of the table gave them "self-confidence".

Marcel Hartel, having experienced promotion to the Bundesliga with Union Berlin and Arminia Bielefeld, is aiming to utilize his knowledge to help FC St. Pauli, his current club in Bundesliga 2, achieve promotion as well. In his role as a midfielder, Hartel is making an extra effort to lead by example, acknowledging his responsibility to "go a bit further" in their quest for success.
