Bundesliga 2 - St. Pauli misses out on the fall championship

FC St. Pauli missed out on the fall championship of the 2nd Bundesliga due to a late draw despite the best opportunities. Coach Fabian Hürzeler's side were held to a 1-1 (0-0) draw by Wehen Wiesbaden in front of 29,332 spectators at the Millerntor Stadium on Sunday. The dominant St. Pauli took the lead through Marcel Hartel (47th minute), John Iredale (84th) equalized shortly before the end. The Hamburg side (33 points) now spend the winter in second place in the table behind Holstein Kiel (35).

The hosts played a dominant game, repeatedly putting Wiesbaden to the sword. The only thing they didn't want to do at first was score. Elias Saad (14th minute) did not hit the ball properly, Hartel (19th) missed the far corner from ten meters out. Winger Saad (23) also failed to make the most of his second chance from the back.

St. Pauli were rewarded for their efforts at the start of the second half. Johannes Eggestein played a perfect pass to Hartel, who remained calm and scored for the overdue lead. However, the lack of efficiency continued to be an issue: Irvine (54, 64), Hartel (58, 72), Saad (73) and Smith (78) all failed with their chances. Wiesbaden turned up the heat in the closing stages, with substitute Iredale (81) hitting the crossbar after a counter-attack, but scored the equalizer shortly afterwards.
