Bundesliga 2 - St. Pauli manager wants "clarity" in contract poker
FC St. Pauli sporting director Andreas Bornemann has increased the pressure in the contract negotiations with coach Fabian Hürzeler. "Clarity is good for everyone," said the sporting director of the second-division soccer club on Monday. "Fabian needs to be clear with his people, with whom he has a closer and more intimate exchange, about what his career path, his idea, is."
According to media reports, Hürzeler's contract with the promotion contenders expires at the end of this season. Despite their joint sporting success, the coach and the second-placed team have not yet been able to agree on an extension.
Bornemann emphasized on Monday that the goal is "that we extend the collaboration". Hürzeler was promoted from assistant to head coach in December 2022. He took over St. Pauli in 15th place in the table. The 30-year-old led the club to fifth place in the table last season with an extremely successful second half of the season. The Hamburg club are currently second after a first half of the season without defeat and are therefore in a direct promotion place.
"Fabian is a stroke of luck for St. Pauli," said Bornemann. "I think we can definitely say that we are for him too."
Hürzeler also commented on the contract negotiations in a media round on Monday. "For me, it's never about prestige, about money, about all the issues," he said. "The most important thing for me at the moment is development. And not just the development of the individual players, the team, the club - but also of myself, of course, that I personally find myself in an environment where I can continue to develop."
He knows what he has in St. Pauli, said the coach. Bornemann was also convinced "that we can still be a good address for him for the next steps".
