Customs - St. Nicholas post office: children's wishes from peace to chocolate

The St. Nicholas post office in St. Nicholas in Saarland has been up and running since Sunday. Around 12,000 letters from children with wishes from all over the world have already been answered by the team of volunteers and are now being sent, said Sabine Gerecke, head of the children's letter campaign. "We want the children to have the letters in their hands by St. Nicholas Day if possible." St. Nicholas Day is December 6.

Anyone who writes to St. Nicholas in St. Nicholas by Christmas will receive a reply. As a lot of mail also arrives from abroad, there are also replies in Ukrainian, Hungarian, Russian, Spanish, English and Chinese, among others. At the moment, most of the letters come from children in Germany. After viewing the first letters, the children's top wishes are peace, health, happiness and chocolate.

The Santa Claus Post Office is open until December 24. During Advent and Christmas 2022, employees responded to 31,636 letters from children from a total of 52 countries. For more than 50 years, children have been writing to St. Nicholas in the small town in the municipality of Großrosseln near the French border.

According to Deutsche Post, the Santa Claus post office in Warndt is the oldest Santa Claus post office in Germany. There are seven Christmas post offices throughout Germany where children can send their letters to Santa Claus, the Christ Child or St. Nicholas.
