Upcoming votes in Europe - Springer declares, "This demonstrates our unstoppability."
The AfD leader in Brandenburg, René Springer, feels optimistic about his party's chances in the upcoming European elections. "I'm proud of our progress, given the opposition we've faced since the start of the year," Springer told the German Press Agency on Sunday. "I believe this proves we can't be held back."
Springer predicts that the AfD will triumph in the European elections, while the SPD will face defeat in Brandenburg. "We need others to treat us with respect, to engage with us meaningfully," he added. The party leader also foresees a favorable climate for the fall's state parliamentary election campaign.
According to preliminary results of 46% of the votes counted in Brandenburg's European election, AfD has secured 33.1%, CDU reached 18.1%, and SPD gained 12.2%.
Across Germany, AfD leads with 19.9% of the votes, followed by the CDU with 18.0% and the SPD with 17.2%. The Left and the Greens each received 12.3% of the votes, the FDP obtained 4.4%, and the Free Voters gained 2.2%.
These European elections are viewed as an indicator of public opinion 3.5 months before the state parliamentary voting, although they're not direct comparisons. Concurrently, local elections took place in Brandenburg.
