Current meteorological conditions - Spring experienced an unusually high rainfall and temperatures were higher than normal.

This spring in Saarland has been exceptionally wet and warmer than normal. The typical temperature was a balmy 11 degrees Celsius, much higher than the average of 8.4 degrees, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The amount of rainfall was also rather high at 396 liters per square meter - way more than the standard amount for the reference period of 1961 to 1990 (222 liters per square meter). As a result, Saarland was the wettest federal state in Germany. This spring made it to the second wettest on record in the region.

The DWD also noted that the month of May broke rainfall records. "Following heavy downpours at the beginning of the month, almost the entire state was affected by flooding," their statement read. Sunny weather in Saarland lasted only 430 hours, fewer than the typical 468-hour average.

The DWD spokesperson remarked that the average temperature this spring was slightly under the previous record: "In the Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland region, the average temperature in 2011 and 2007 was 11.2 degrees."

Nationwide, spring was the hottest it's ever been since records began in 1881. The record high temperature for spring was 10.8 degrees Celsius, which is 3.1 degrees warmer than the reference period of 1961 to 1990. In comparison to the more recent and warmer period of 1991 to 2020, the difference was 1.9 degrees.
