Internal Security - Spranger calls for more pace in gun law reform
Berlin's Interior Senator Iris Spranger demands that the federal government accelerate the tightening of gun laws. "The protection of the population from the misuse of weapons and knife crime must be improved," the SPD politician told the German Press Agency. "There is an urgent need for legislative action here," she said, reiterating her demand: "We urgently need a tightening of gun laws."
The senator recalled that the Interior Ministers' Conference had already asked the Federal Ministry of the Interior to introduce appropriate legal tightening of gun laws, for example for the possession and carrying of blank-firing and signal weapons. "It is important to me that the need for such a weapon must be clearly proven."
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has also repeatedly stated that she wants to tighten gun laws, Spranger added. "The formation of opinion within the federal government has been ongoing for some time. I hope very much that the federal government will reach an agreement on a new regulation this year." On June 14, 2024, the Bundesrat passed a resolution on the revision of gun laws, Spranger said, with Berlin explicitly supporting it.
The debate on a reform of gun laws has been ongoing nationwide for some time. The Police Union (GdP) has recently called for more measures against knife attacks. If gun laws are changed, regulations on knives should also be considered.
Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, also from the SPD party, has expressed her desire to tighten gun laws, aligning with Berlin's Interior Senator Iris Spranger's demand. The revised gun laws, including stricter regulations for the possession and carrying of blank-firing and signal weapons, were supported by Berlin in the Bundesrat on June 14, 2024.
