- Spouse of a Nurse Faces Charges for Attempted Homicide
A 63-year-old woman is currently on trial at the Hanau Regional Court for allegedly attempting to kill her husband, who has dementia. The prosecution claims her actions were preplanned, which is considered an aggravating factor in murder cases.
According to the indictment, the lady was struggling with caring for her severely demented husband, leading her to allegedly plot his demise in August 2023 in Gründau, Main-Kinzig district. She's accused of crushing 20 psychiatric medication tablets and dissolving them in water before giving it to the 79-year-old man to drink. The dose was potentially fatal.
Following this, she's said to have consumed the liquid herself and joined the 79-year-old in bed. The couple was discovered unconscious by relatives. Luckily, they were both saved in the hospital.
At the beginning of the trial, the defense described the incident as a tragic situation. The 63-year-old woman allegedly felt overwhelmed by the growing difficulties of caring for him. A later discovery revealed a letter from her expressing her frustration at being ignored when she asked for help. The defendant, who had a blood alcohol level between 2.6% and 2.9% at the time of the incident, expressed regret and claimed she had been suffering from chronic sleep deprivation due to nighttime care duties. The trial is expected to run until the end of August.
The prosecution is arguing that the 63-year-old woman's actions, as detailed in the indictment, amount to attempted murder, as she allegedly attempted to kill her husband by administering a potentially fatal dose of medication. Regrettably, due to her actions, both the woman and her husband were found unconscious and required hospitalization, but fortunately, they both survived the ordeal that was later classified as attempted murder.
