Athletic regulations - Sports clubs in Lower Saxony boast higher membership levels.
In Lower Saxony, sports clubs experienced a significant rise in membership last year. According to data from the Sports Ministry and the State Sports Association in Hanover, approximately 80,000 new members joined these clubs - a 3% increase from the previous year. Currently, there are over 2.6 million members across the state's nearly 9,100 clubs, which is almost one-third of the entire population.
Gymnastics and football emerged as the two most popular sports, accounting for more than half of the total membership. Sports Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) described these figures as evidence that sports clubs play an important role in community life and have successfully rebounded from the decline in membership during the pandemic.
Reinhard Rawe, the Chairman of the Board at the State Sports Association, was elated by the large number of children who joined sports clubs last year. Behrens also mentioned the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany and the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, stating, "Sports unite people, and in these challenging times, it's crucial to share common experiences."
